In Color?

©Kathleen Rietz
Some of you who commented on my earlier post of this sketch (below) suggested I try adding some color. So I did, digitally. I sort of like the soft sepia tones of the original, though. But then again, the color perks it up and brings your eye right to the puppy, I think... What do you think? Do you like it better in color? Or sepia? Why?

  1. I like the sepia version better.
This color one is lovely too but there is something so appealing and just so beautiful to your works in sepia.

I think being monochromatic just accentuates the softness of your rendering and it goes along so well with the theme. The lights and shadows are so beautiful Kate. I really think you should build a portfolio only on sepias, or at least have several together in one section of the portfolio.

    They are truly something... :o)

  2. Honestly I love the colored one a little better; it's so soft and tender looking. And I am really impressed you colored it digitally, wow I need to learn how to work with that better. You did a fantastic job. :)

  3. I love them both, but I think I like the color version better. The only reason is that I think in the sepia version, the child comes across as faintly sad or melancholy, but adding the brighter colors makes him seem more content.

  5. I really love them both, though I didn't notice the heart shaped spots until I saw the color. How adorable! I was thinking that a much more muted color palette might be nice. Sort of like those old hand colored photos only softer and more subtle. Just hinting at color. Isn't it fun to live in the digital world?

  6. Can't... choose... both... so goooood....brain hurts... arrrgh...

I like the colors, they balance well!

Oh, I finally got around to using your suggestion to make my letters brush presets in Photoshop, my hand was getting cramped, so thanks for that!

  7. I really love them both but if I HAD to pick a favorite it would be the sepia one, I think.

  10. It sounds like the easy way out, but both are really wonderful. I like the sepia one mainly for my own personal reasons, which is the nostalgia and poignancy it creates. The color added to the sepia gives it such a nice soft feel while really making the pup pop.

    Two winners, in my book!
