This Little Piggy

I couldn't help myself. I haven't sketched anything lately that isn't related to the books I am illustrating. I sort of miss doing a sketch a day, like I did last winter. Last night I was thinking about babies and how soft and sweet their little bedclothes and toys are. And so I started wanting to do some doodles of plush baby toys and clothes. I think there is a part of my brain that also misses being a product developer/designer, which I have done for nearly 20 years. So I thought I would grab a moment and allow myself to doodle a little plush piggy. Just wanted to share.

  2. This is one of my favorite drawings I've seen you make so far! It is adorable.

May I ask, are you drawing on paper with pencil? I love the soft quality you get, can you tell us what type of paper/pencil you use? Or what digital process you use to make these little sketches?

  6. Thanks everyone!

Carol H.~ I use a #2 graphite pencil in a sketchbook. This sketchbook has a softer "rag" paper with a little more tooth to it than I like, but now I am used to it because I know what to expect. Because the plush pig toy felt a bit nostalgic to me, I used Photoshop to give the drawing a slight sepia tone. To get the soft shading, I just use my fingertip or a smudge stick to (in the case my fingertip) smear the pencil a bit. This is especially nice on a "soft" toy like the plush pig, or on a child's face.
