  38. I always get so inspired seeing other artist's work. This is great. I love the story being told and all the fun details... like her hair clip. Can't wait to see who wins the spaghetti eating contest. What media did you do this in? Watercolor? Digital? A mixture?

  40. Thanks everyone! I was pretty happy with how this turned out, too. I was working on it last week, and then saw that it would be so perfect for the Illustration Friday theme. It felt good to actually devote enough time to an illustration to make it turn out just how I wanted it to.

For all of you who have asked me, this was rendered in gouache. I built up layers of thin glazes on the girl's face and hands so her skin looks smooth, and for the rest of it I let the brush strokes show to add texture and interest...I had a lot of fun doing this with the background, cat's fur, and table. Oh, and for the cat's face, I did go in with a little white colored pencil to highlight his eyebrow area and cheeks, nose, lips, paws....But mostly the illustration is just glazes of gouache with intentional brushstrokes. I carefully planned out my color scheme and then just had fun with it.

Thanks everyone for your kind comments! You are so encouraging!
