Day 14 of 21

©Kathleen Rietz
I love ballet. So much so that I lost track of time on this drawing session. I vacillated in and out of dance throughout my life, then went back to ballet in my 30's until too many injuries and a crooked back made me retire my slippers to the back of a drawer, which I rediscovered while cleaning out that drawer last week. I still daydream of going back...

  1. So beautiful and graceful Kate! I think that gracefulness translates into all of your work ... in your fluid lines and movement ... all very much like a dance. Thanks for sharing that side of yourself with us! :)

  2. Thanks Joan. I do think ballet has really helped me to be aware of movement and form when I am drawing. Ballet gives you so much body awareness...you are aware of balance, weight distribution, appearance, and the space you take up while moving from one point to another. It really was invaluable! I learned so much about art through dance.

  3. Oh Kate, I just love all your sketches!! I've lost track of time as usual, we have to see the Jim Flora exhibit and catch up with lunch!! I'll have to block out another seven hours! Your work is breathtaking as usual, have a great day, I have the autism walk this sunday, but let's get together soon (maybe memorial day if you're not busy?)!

    take care doll!!

  5. I LOVE these! I also love the fact that even though your style is realistic there is still a wonderful whimsy to your characters!

  7. Lovely light - dancey drawings! I'm the same, went back to ballet after having my first 2 children but it was never the same. I still dream I can do it though!

  9. That's a great pose Kate. Very well balanced, excellent proportions.

Is ballet bad for your back? I could see how it would be hard on your ankles, and feet.

  11. Beautiful... so lovely... and delicate Kate, love them :o)

I love ballet too Kate. I was in classes for several years, as a kid, never got to point though. But when we moved my mom had to take me off the class, and the teacher asked her to please keep me in ballet, no matter what, that I would transport myself every time I was dancing.. but she never did, don't know why really, things that happen in life.

So here I am a frustrated little ballerina-wanna- be trapped in a grown up body :o)
