Day 7 of 21

©Kathleen Rietz
Today I worked on adding an interior in my work. I often struggle with what to put in a background. This is pretty pain, but it is a quick sketch. My aim was to set a story and setting. Jumping on a bed is a theme in my illustration work lately! I wonder why that is...?

  1. Be a kid again, I guess!

  2. Great expression, and pose on the girl. I really like your backgrounds. I struggle with them too though, so I sympathize.

The only critique I have is that the curtain is directly behind the girl's body. I found that a little distracting. I'd move that window over to the left a bit. Otherwise I think it's terrific.

  3. That is adorable! The cat in the window is a nice touch. Jumping on beds. . . I'd say it's rebellious! Kids are always told not to do it, but can't resist the fun!

  4. Hahaha! I think you are just a kid at heart Kate! Love the doll and the little kitty watching the fun from outside. I bet it wants to join in.

  6. Wonderful action shot! I wonder if the cat would be that aloof with her jumping like that. Of course, cats ARE aloof. :)

I love your work. i think sea otters are the one of the best critters for childrens illustration. and what could be more fun than jumping on the bed.

  10. Backgrounds are what I struggle with too. I always want to draw the character...but I think it's good to keep pushing. (that is what always takes me the longest in compositions! I totally feel your pain!
This is such a great drawing, and the background is wonderful!

  14. Maybe bed jumping is an expression of innocent joy, and freedom of thought.

I think I'll go jump on my bed and try this out!

    Great series Kate!

  15. Love your work, Kate. Why is jumping on a bed a theme in your illustration work lately? Maybe because you enjoy life and fun is your middle name. ;-D

  17. The last time you posted a bed jumping, I was very tempted to get in touch with my inner child and give it a try. But I was afraid I'd break a hip, heehee.

Maybe I'll try throw caution to the wind and give it a try tonight.

I know what you mean about backgrounds. They can be a bit daunting at times, but they do add a nice dimension. Nice job!

  18. lol I know that feeling so well. Too bad that while the time pass by you become so responsible that you can't enjoyed like when you were younger ;)

    It's a wonderful image, Kat.
